This image is a process of loss of innocence. It accompanies all of our training as subjects: we are born organisms and we become subjects by internalizing our culture, inscribed in the practices of meaning that surround us since birth, in the process of language learning, which means that we have become able to understand meaning. But the language that allows all this is, hopelessly, that of the Other. The small human organism, which begins without any sense of distinction between itself and the world, separates itself from its environment and is obliged to formulate its wishes in terms of the differences already available in language, however alienating they may be.
